Baptism Celebration

  • Mood:
Sunday I was invited to attend a baptism celebration.  The actual ceremony was taking place at a church that I had never attended before, St. Joseph's.  I always feel pretty uncomfortable when I go to events where I have never been before.  The church was nice, there were a lot of different faces, and some familiar ones too.  The sermon was about fear and how it all goes back to you.  For example, if you say you're afraid of your mother, it's not really that you're afraid of her it's that you're afraid of letting her down and seeing her reaction to it.  The Father started talking about the babies that were going to get baptised and then he got really angry at one of the soon-to-be godparents.  It's church rules that require the godparents to be married by the church in order to be able to take care of the godchild if, God forbid, the parents should pass away.  So the Father starts telling the everyone at mass about these people who lied to him, the church and God about being married when in fact he's recieved information that states otherwise.  The godparents are supposed to provide the original church marriage certificate and then the church verifies it with the diocese that created it and these people were caught in the lie.  Later on during the ceremony the Father restates his sentiments and advises that he would prefer that these people not approach the baptism pool.  I watched all the people that went up to baptise and everyone had godparents...so it got me wondering whether they had the balls to actually go up even after the Father had stated for them not to.
